Neato! A fountain in Osaka Station City “prints” designs with water.

I think someone in my year at uni did a project based on this principle. I only understand it now I see this video! Very cool.

10 Lessons

These are some insightful and thought-provoking lessons from Wieden+Kennedy’s Executive Creative Director, John C Jay: 10 Lessons for young designers.

1: Be authentic. The most powerful asset you have is your individuality, what makes you unique. It’s time to stop listening to others on what you should do.
2: Work harder than anyone else and you will always benefit from the effort.
3: Get off the computer and connect with real people and culture. Life is visceral.
4: Constantly improve your craft. Make things with your hands. Innovation in thinking is not enough.
5: Travel as much as you can. It is a humbling and inspiring experience to learn just how much you don’t know.
6: Being original is still king, especially in this tech-driven, group-grope world.
7: Try not to work for stupid people or you’ll soon become one of them.
8: Instinct and intuition are all-powerful. Learn to trust them.
9: The Golden Rule actually works. Do good.
10: If all else fails, No. 2 is the greatest competitive advantage of any career.

Freunde von Freunden

This is Axel. He lives in Berlin with three other friends and shares this amazing 120m2 loft apartment. Freunde von Freunden explore and document the inhabitations and work spaces of people mostly from the creative industry.

Beautiful photography and interesting people make this site very enjoyable. Have a look.

Kaleidoscopic Fashion Spectacular

What do you call 20 sensory-overloaded minutes fashioned out of 60+ dancers, an original visual program created by Daft Punk’s light designers, a new pop symphony from one-half of N.A.S.A., and over 155 rooms of New York’s Standard Hotel? You could start with “Spectacular,” but even that seems limiting. This one-time-only show for Target’s 2010 fall apparel collection is just about the coolest and most unique event Mother’s ever produced!

Surfing with Sand between my Toes

Anyone who has been on the beach will remember the blissful feeling of the warm sand between the toes. Justin Kemp has put that feeling in his living room. Not sure if my OCD will allow the sand to be so near the Mac Pro… and the rest of the living room for that matter.

Studio Job

Job Smeets and his partner Nynke Tynagel work together as Studio Job and currently are exhibiting their latest work in the carpenters workshop gallery from 18 March until 8 May 2010. Their work combines fine craftsmanship with a dark undertone while commenting on the condition and attitudes of the modern world.

The figures are cut with a laser from maple, set in Indian rose wood.

Exhibition Design Solution

I really like this design for an exhibition space solution. The use of space and the resulting transformation really works with the subject of the exhibition (looking east/eastern culture). The bridge in the middle seems to be a metaphor for the division of west and east. The exhibition explores the dynamics and tensions between the two. More pictures after the jump.
