Earlier this year Alessi launched the Alessi Moka by Italian design maestro Alessandro Mendini. It’s a homage to Alberto Alessi’s grandfather Alfonso Bialetti, the inventor of the now iconic Bialetti Moka Express. Here Alessi writes about his grandfather’s lack of interest in commercial success and fame and yet 200 million Biallettis have sold worldwide.

Now this is intelligent design that works.

This student* from Glasgow has build a living structure inspired by urban nomads. The structure was designed by Ken Isaacs and inspired by the urban nomads movement from the 60s and 70s.

Brussels designer Sylvain Willenz drew on cassette tapes and floppy disks for the design of these external hard drives. Designed for Freecom, Germany.

Congratulations to LCC’s BA Graphic & Media Design graduate Min-Kyu Choi and his amazing folding plug. He recently won the Brit Insurance Award.

The plug is just 10mm wide when it is folded. To unfold it, the two live pins swivel 90 degrees and the plastic surround folds back around the pins so the face of the plug looks the same as a standard UK plug.
